The SMS Lunchtime Recital Series will resume this week: On Friday (18th October) Giulio Potenza (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, London) will be playing piano recital featuring works by Janáček and Schumann as well as a Tchaikovsky paraphrase by Pabst.
One week later (25th October) there will be a chamber music recital of duets for clarinet and bassoon featuring Vani Rajendran and former Somervillian Matt Rattley. The Control Chorus (conducted by Stefan Schwarz) sings Song von der Ware ('Song of Supply and Demand') from the play Die Maßnahme (1930) by Hanns Eisler and Bertolt Brecht. The singers are accompanied by Robert Pecksmith (piano) and Douglas Knight (percussion). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMefC6WVsqI Robert Pecksmith plays Alfred Schnittke's Two Pieces for Organ (1980) on the chapel organs of Keble and Harris Manchester. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNzgpi1H4K0 We have two more SMS concerts coming up before the end of term: On Tuesday (11th June, 8pm) there will be an evening concert of contemporary classical music featuring music by Ligeti, Somerville graduate student Andrew Watts and others. Performers include James Donaldson (cello), Emyr Wyn (piano), Kevin Sliwoski (trumpet) and Luke Shoham (piano). The title of the concert will be My Twentieth Century.
On Friday (14th June, 1:15pm) Glenn Wong (countertenor) and Orly Watson (piano/harpsichord) are performing this year's final SMS lunchtime recital. Glenn will be singing a selection of 17th and 18th-century arias as well as a selection of Romantic songs. The SMS lunchtime recital series will resume in 2013/2014. The next recital (Friday 18th October) will feature Italian pianist Giulio Potenza. Details of next term's concerts will be announced in due course. Darius Milhaud: Scaramouche Gabriel Pierné: Canzonetta (arr. Marcel Mule) played by James Soper (saxophone) and Orly Watson (piano) and Sergei Rachmaninov: Prelude No. 7 in C minor (Allegro), op. 23/7 Sergei Rachmaninov: Prelude No. 8 in A flat (Allegro vivace), op. 23/8 played by Luke Faulkner (piano) In weeks 6 and 7 two of Somerville's music finalists will be presenting a preview of their exam recitals: On Friday of 6th week Douglas Knight (clarinet) will perform works by Schumann, Carter and Brahms. He will be accompanied by Guy Newbury (piano).
In 7th week Lucy Nolan (harp) will be playing works by Dussek, Fauré, Glinka, Mathias and Hindemith. See the recital page for details. This week we have two concerts lined up, an evening recital and a lunchtime recital. On Tuesday at 8pm Somerville's choral scholars will be singing a selection of songs, arias and duets by Händel, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Puccini, Strauss and Vaughan Williams.
On Friday at 1:15pm pianist Luke Faulkner will be making his second appearance at Somerville Chapel and perform works by Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov and Godowsky. See the recital page for more information. This week's lunchtime recital will feature the Oxford Guitar Ensemble. Antony Beere, David Hewings, Charlie Jarvis, Nia Madden, Giles Masters, Tom Nicholas and Stefan Schwarz will be playing a selection of guitar arrangements and original works by Purcell, Brouwer and Villa Lobos.
See the recital page for more details. This week we have two recitals coming up: On Thursday Emily Winkler (soprano) and Luke Faulkner (piano) will be performing songs and arias by Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert and Debussy as well as a selection of show tunes and some of Emily's own compositions.
On Friday James Soper, a saxophonist from Lady Margaret Hall, and Orly Watson (piano) are going to perform works by Pierné, Bozza and Milhaud. Full details and programmes can be found on this page. Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator) This week's lunchtime recital will feature a guest soloist from Birmingham Conservatoire: Daniel Wyman (baritone) will be singing songs and arias by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Wolf, Korngold and Vaughan Williams. He will be accompanied by Robert Pecksmith (piano).
