Vocal Recital

The last SMS recital of Hilary Term will be performed by Olivia Alice Martin (soprano), a music finalist from Oxford Brookes, and Samuel Swinnerton (piano).

Olivia will be singing arias and songs by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Fauré and Sullivan. See the recitals page for full details.

The lunchtime recital series will resume on Friday 2nd May. Nick Machin, Somerville's Organ Scholar Elect, will be playing a recital of works for organ and piano. Details of all SMS recitals in Trinity Term will be announced in due course.

Elizabethan Lute Songs

The SMS recital in 7th week will be performed by Tom Hammond-Davies (countertenor), a lay clerk at New College and Director of Music at St Michael at the North Gate, and guitarist Giles Masters.

They will be performing a selection of lute songs by John Dowland and a contemporary work for countertenor and guitar by Michael Finnissy.

Vocal Recital

This Friday former choral scholar Simon Grange (now a postgraduate at the Royal College of Music) will be returning to Somerville to perform a recital of songs by Loewe, Zelter, Wolf and Britten.

He will be accompanied by Guy Newbury (piano), Senior Lecturer in Music at Pembroke College.

A Night at the Musicals

This term's Choral Scholars' Recital will take a slightly different format: Somerville's choral scholars will perform songs and duets from favourite Broadway and West End musicals to raise money for the choir's summer tour to America (see the choir's crowdfunding page).

There will be a post-concert social with free wine and nibbles in Vaughan SCR.

Recital at Oxford Town Hall

On Wednesday Robert Smith will be playing a lunchtime recital on Oxford Town Hall's 1897 Father Willis organ. The programme will include music by Bach, Schumann, Reger, Mendelssohn, Gowers, Elgar and Williams.

On Friday Jonathan Stamp (Birmingham Conservatoire), organ scholar at Birmingham Cathedral, will be playing a recital on Somerville Chapel's fine Harrison organ. He will be performing works by Buxtehude, Frescobaldi, Sweelinck, Boëllman and Vierne. See the recitals page for further details.

This Friday Luke Faulkner (University of Edinburgh), who performed in two highly successful SMS recitals last year, will be returning to Somerville: His new programme includes works by Rachmaninov, Beethoven and Chopin. A PDF file of the complete programme is available for download from the recitals page.

Recordings of his performances of Rachmaninov's Prelude No. 7 in C minor and Prelude No. 8 in A flat major at Somerville Chapel can be seen on our YouTube channel.
