The SMS lunchtime recital in 3rd week (1st November) will be performed by Nicholas Freestone, the Senior Organ Scholar of Worcester College.
His programme includes pieces by Mendelssohn, Finzi amd Duruflé as will as Benjamin Britten's only organ solo work (to mark this year's Britten centenary). The full programme is available for download from the recitals page. Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator) The SMS Lunchtime Recital Series will resume this week: On Friday (18th October) Giulio Potenza (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, London) will be playing piano recital featuring works by Janáček and Schumann as well as a Tchaikovsky paraphrase by Pabst.
One week later (25th October) there will be a chamber music recital of duets for clarinet and bassoon featuring Vani Rajendran and former Somervillian Matt Rattley. Please see our recitals page for details of all of this term's lunchtime recitals. Stefan Schwarz (Recitals Coordinator) It gives me great pleasure to invite you all to our start of year social event this evening, in Vaughan SCR. Note that the start time has been moved half an hour forward from that mentioned in our leaflets - it will begin at 6:30pm. As I said, all are welcome to attend, in particular those who are new to the college. There will be free wine, soft drinks and a variety of snacks available, so do come down, and meet fellow musicians and music lovers. If you are interested in forming an ensemble, this is also a very good opportunity to meet other musicians in Somerville.
I hope to see you later. Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) I would like to invite you all to come along to our start of year SMS meeting. We'll meet at 5pm on Thursday (10th October) in the Terrace/Bar. Please do come along if you would like to get involved with SMS, or have any ideas for things musical, as we will be planning the events for the term.
Hope to see you then, or else at a concert soon! Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) Our new freshers' leaflet is now available for download. Printed copies will be distributed in 0th week. We hope to see you at the annual SMS Freshers’ Drinks in Vaughan SCR at 6:30pm on Saturday of 0th week (12th October).
We have lots of events planned for next term: There will be a Freshers' Concert on Thursday of 3rd week (31st October) and the weekly lunchtime recitals will resume on Friday of 1st week (18th October). Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) Stefan Schwarz (Webmaster and Recitals Coordinator) Another academic year is over and we have uploaded a few more recordings from the second half of Trinity Term:
The Control Chorus (conducted by Stefan Schwarz) sings Song von der Ware ('Song of Supply and Demand') from the play Die Maßnahme (1930) by Hanns Eisler and Bertolt Brecht. The singers are accompanied by Robert Pecksmith (piano) and Douglas Knight (percussion). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMefC6WVsqI Robert Pecksmith plays Alfred Schnittke's Two Pieces for Organ (1980) on the chapel organs of Keble and Harris Manchester. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNzgpi1H4K0 Somerville Music Society will be taking an inventory of all instruments, equipment, and CDs, located around college, at the end of this academic year. In order to speed up the identification of SMS property, we politely request that all student owned instruments and equipment are removed from Park and DHQ Music Rooms by the Wednesday of 9th week. Where this is not possible, SMS should be notified with a brief description of the item and its location, for example "Casio keyboard, silver, DHQ" or "Marshall guitar amplifier, Park Music Room".
Obviously, the opposite applies to all students currently borrowing any SMS items - it is imperative that it is returned or at least its whereabouts made known. Whilst there is no plan to remove any equipment, this ensures that no student property is lost, as all items remaining in these rooms will be assumed to belong to SMS. Sam Walker (SMS President Elect) We have two more SMS concerts coming up before the end of term: On Tuesday (11th June, 8pm) there will be an evening concert of contemporary classical music featuring music by Ligeti, Somerville graduate student Andrew Watts and others. Performers include James Donaldson (cello), Emyr Wyn (piano), Kevin Sliwoski (trumpet) and Luke Shoham (piano). The title of the concert will be My Twentieth Century.
On Friday (14th June, 1:15pm) Glenn Wong (countertenor) and Orly Watson (piano/harpsichord) are performing this year's final SMS lunchtime recital. Glenn will be singing a selection of 17th and 18th-century arias as well as a selection of Romantic songs. The SMS lunchtime recital series will resume in 2013/2014. The next recital (Friday 18th October) will feature Italian pianist Giulio Potenza. Details of next term's concerts will be announced in due course. If you are interested in performing a lunchtime recital at Somerville next year, please email Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator). We are also planning to put on a fully staged production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd in Hilary Term. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Robert Pecksmith. Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator and Webmaster) There will be an SMS meeting on Friday at 5pm. Note the location will be New Council Room (by the lodge). In addition to any other items on the agenda, this meeting will be particularly important as we will be electing new committee members for SMS next year. This is a great opportunity to get involved, and shape the musical life of the college. While these roles are often filled by music students, absolutely anyone with an interest in music is encouraged to come forward - indeed, most of the present committee does not read music as a subject.
Positions that will be available are:
If anyone wishes to stand for it, the positions of Secretary, Webmaster and Recitals Coordinator are also available. The present officer of these roles will probably still be able to carry them out, so refilling these roles is less of a priority. However, if you would like to stand for any of them, go for it! More detailed descriptions of these roles can be found on our newly revamped website under 'About SMS - Constitution'. The positions are described from article 6 onwards, for anyone who's interested. Alternatively, (and much more interestingly) do feel free to talk/email to any of the present occupants of these positions, who will be able to give you the low-down on what the job entails. These are myself, Isabel Sinagola, Orly Watson, Douglas Knight and Ian Buchanan. Robert Pecksmith (SMS President) |
