The lunchtime recital series will resume in Michaelmas Term. Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator) Due to unforeseen circumstances Brian McAlea and Emily Bootle have had to cancel today's lunchtime recital. We will try to reschedule the concert for later this term or next year.
Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator) This week's SMS lunchtime recital will feature Brian McAlea (baritone), a second-year music student at New College and member of the world-famous New College Choir. He will be accompanied by Emily Bootle (piano).
Brian will be singing a selection of English songs (mostly Shakespeare settings) by Vaughan Williams, Ireland, Finzi, Quilter and Britten. The programme is available for download from the recitals page. Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator) This evening there is the Margaret Irene Scholars' Recital at 8pm in Somerville Chapel with performances from Josephine Robertson (violin), Charlotte McLean (recorder) and Katie Jeffries-Harris (mezzo-soprano), accompanied by Douglas Knight (piano).
It will be a really amazing recital and includes music by Telemann, Macguire, Brahms and Wolf. Charlie McLean (SMS President) This Friday first-year music student Katie Jeffries-Harris (mezzo-soprano) will be presenting a preview of her exam recital which will include works by Mozart, Gluck, Händel, Brahms and Wolf. She will be accompanied by Somerville's former Senior Organ Scholar, Douglas Knight.
The programme is available for download from our recitals page. On Friday at 6pm the Choir of Somerville College and Somerville Music Society will be presenting West End Favourites and Film Music, a gala concert in aid of the choir's US tour.
Members of the Choir of Somerville College, Robert Pecksmith (organ/piano) and special guest star David Crown (baritone) perform a selection of favourite show tunes and film music. The concert features extracts from The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Cats, Star Wars and Show Boat as well as 'One Day More', the rousing finale from Act I of Les Misérables. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the choir's summer tour. Nick Machin, Somerville's next organ scholar, will be performing his first solo recital at Somerville Chapel on Friday at 1:15pm.
The programme includes piano works by Turina, Liszt, Debussy and Shostakovich as well as organ music by Berkeley, Stanford and Widor. Please see the recitals page for further details. The recital will be part of the 150 for 150 Recital Challenge in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Royal College of Organists. Somerville will be the only Oxbridge college to contribute two concerts to this series: Nick Machin's lunchtime recital this Friday and an evening recital featuring Robert Pecksmith (Organ Scholar) at the Auenkirche (Berlin) in August.
