This week we have two recitals coming up: On Thursday Emily Winkler (soprano) and Luke Faulkner (piano) will be performing songs and arias by Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert and Debussy as well as a selection of show tunes and some of Emily's own compositions.

Our termcard for Trinity is now online. More information about this term's lunchtime recitals can be found on the recital page. Socials will take place after the evening concerts in weeks 4 and 7. We will also have an SMS dinner at the end of 8th week (details tbc).

Somerville College is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its recently restored Harrison organ in a special concert that will bring together two generations of organ scholars: Somerville's first organ scholar and college organist Sam Bayliss (2001-2005) joins current organ scholars Douglas Knight and Robert Pecksmith for an exciting programme that will explore the full range of the instrument.
Somerville's chapel organ was the last instrument to be designed by Arthur Harrison. Although the organ advisor was none other than Albert Schweitzer, the founder of the 'Orgelbewegung', it is very much a Romantic instrument. The programme will include works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Boëllmann and Elgar as well as a surprise item (see the poster). Monday, 28th January 2013, 7:30pm, Somerville Chapel
Original Compositions Concert An evening of music and poetry, entirely composed by Somervillians! The programme includes an eclectic mix of genres, from singer-songwriter material, classical piano music and a folk band. There will also be poetry written by Somervillians past and present. Friday, 1st February 2013, 9pm, Somerville Chapel Early Music Concert Immerse yourself in the sounds of the Renaissance as SMS takes you on a journey through some of the vocal and instrumental music of that age. Featuring Somerville Choir's 'Octet', a Dowland duet, the first concert of Somerville's Baroque Group and some recorder music! Not to be missed. To help you get in the spirit, there will also be mulled wine and some tasty medieval treats served at the start of the concert. The concert will be followed by a social in Vaughan SCR, with free wine and soft drinks. Click here to download the programme. The CD will be available for purchase during the interval and after the concert. SMS is hosting an open concert next Monday (12th November), 8pm in the Chapel. Everybody is welcome to come along and contribute a musical item, of any length or of any style, and no matter how much or little experience you have.
If you enjoyed the Freshers' Concert, then please do come along, hopefully this time there should be more variety; there will definitely be more wine at the social following the concert! If you would like to take part, then please email Robert Pecksmith with the name of your piece. Amps/accompanists can be arranged if necessary. Do invite friends along too!
