Somerville College is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its recently restored Harrison organ in a special concert that will bring together two generations of organ scholars: Somerville's first organ scholar and college organist Sam Bayliss (2001-2005) joins current organ scholars Douglas Knight and Robert Pecksmith for an exciting programme that will explore the full range of the instrument.
Somerville's chapel organ was the last instrument to be designed by Arthur Harrison. Although the organ advisor was none other than Albert Schweitzer, the founder of the 'Orgelbewegung', it is very much a Romantic instrument. The programme will include works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Boëllmann and Elgar as well as a surprise item (see the poster). Having sung at last year’s Accession Day Service as part of the celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee, the Choir of Somerville College will be returning to St. Paul’s to sing evensong at 5pm on Monday of 6th week (18th February 2013).
The programme will include Noble’s Evening Service in B minor, the Radcliffe Responses and Balfour-Gardiner’s Evening Hymn. The choir will be conducted by David Crown and accompanied by organists Douglas Knight and Robert Pecksmith. |
