This evening there is the Margaret Irene Scholars' Recital at 8pm in Somerville Chapel with performances from Josephine Robertson (violin), Charlotte McLean (recorder) and Katie Jeffries-Harris (mezzo-soprano), accompanied by Douglas Knight (piano).

On Friday at 6pm the Choir of Somerville College and Somerville Music Society will be presenting West End Favourites and Film Music, a gala concert in aid of the choir's US tour.
Members of the Choir of Somerville College, Robert Pecksmith (organ/piano) and special guest star David Crown (baritone) perform a selection of favourite show tunes and film music. The concert features extracts from The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Cats, Star Wars and Show Boat as well as 'One Day More', the rousing finale from Act I of Les Misérables. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the choir's summer tour. This term's Choral Scholars' Recital will take a slightly different format: Somerville's choral scholars will perform songs and duets from favourite Broadway and West End musicals to raise money for the choir's summer tour to America (see the choir's crowdfunding page).

Stefan Schwarz (Choir Manager and SMS Recitals Coordinator) As our second contribution to Somerville's Arts Week, we're organising our first open concert of the term. Given the musical talent we have in college, this promises to be a brilliant evening.

The programme includes works by Händel, Mozart, Gluck, Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Andrew Lloyd Webber and many others.

Performers will include Ben Kimberley, Katie Jeffries-Harris, Harry Travis, James Aldred, Ruth Akinradewo, Oliver Johnston-Watt, Claire Ben-Chorin and Maia Perraudeau and they will be performing an eclectic range of music from Bach to Neil Young (not quite A to Z, but nearly!). Afterwards, there will be a social in the Terrace with wine, soft drinks and nibbles for you all to enjoy.

We have lots of events planned for next term: There will be a Freshers' Concert on Thursday of 3rd week (31st October) and the weekly lunchtime recitals will resume on Friday of 1st week (18th October). Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) Stefan Schwarz (Webmaster and Recitals Coordinator) We have two more SMS concerts coming up before the end of term: On Tuesday (11th June, 8pm) there will be an evening concert of contemporary classical music featuring music by Ligeti, Somerville graduate student Andrew Watts and others. Performers include James Donaldson (cello), Emyr Wyn (piano), Kevin Sliwoski (trumpet) and Luke Shoham (piano). The title of the concert will be My Twentieth Century.
On Friday (14th June, 1:15pm) Glenn Wong (countertenor) and Orly Watson (piano/harpsichord) are performing this year's final SMS lunchtime recital. Glenn will be singing a selection of 17th and 18th-century arias as well as a selection of Romantic songs. The SMS lunchtime recital series will resume in 2013/2014. The next recital (Friday 18th October) will feature Italian pianist Giulio Potenza. Details of next term's concerts will be announced in due course. If you are interested in performing a lunchtime recital at Somerville next year, please email Stefan Schwarz (SMS Recitals Coordinator). We are also planning to put on a fully staged production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd in Hilary Term. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Robert Pecksmith. On Friday at 1:15pm pianist Luke Faulkner will be making his second appearance at Somerville Chapel and perform works by Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov and Godowsky. I would like to warmly invite you all to take part in SMS's final open concert of the year, which will take place on Thursday of 4th week (i.e. week on thursday) at 8pm in the chapel. As ever, contributions are sought and welcomed from anybody who wishes to perform, regardless of genre or experience of performing.
I hope many of you will take up this opportunity, it really is a great experience to play in front of your peers. If you would like to get involved, please do let me know by emailing me. Even if you don't want to perform, I hope you will be able to join us, it will be a night of great music.
