Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of Somerville Choir's US tour. Stefan Schwarz (Choir Manager and SMS Recitals Coordinator) SMS will be holding their final meeting of term on Friday of 7th week at 3pm in the DHQ Music Room.
It would be great to see everyone there, amongst other things we will be discussing:
Please do come along, especially if you have any insights about band equipment which it would be helpful for us to invest in. Also, just a quick reminder that there is a recital at 1.15 in chapel today by our very own Isabel Singola, with Andrew Dickson on piano. It promises to be a really stunning concert, and will make for perfect post - lunch relaxation! Charlotte McLean (SMS President) This week's SMS Lunchtime Recital will be performed by Isabel Sinagola (mezzo-soprano) and Andrew Dickson (piano). Isabel, a third-year English student and choral scholar at Somerville, will be performing extracts from song cycles by Elgar, Schumann and Vaughan Williams. See the recitals page for details of her programme.
Charlotte McLean was elected President at today's SMS meeting and therefore had to resign from her other two committee positions, Secretary and Social Secretary. Katie Jeffries-Harris will take over as Secretary, and Harry Travis will be the new Social Secretary.
Vaughan SCR was not available, so the meeting will instead take place in Park 3 (Freshers - if you enter Park by the main door, turn right, it's next to Park JCR).
There should be plenty to discuss about plans for the future so please do come along; the meeting will be over before 5pm. As I said before, this meeting is particularly important as we will be electing a new President; there may also be elections for other roles should they be needed. A must if you would like to get involved in any way in SMS! Robert Pecksmith (Acting President) This week's recital will feature Danae Eleni (soprano) and Guy Newbury (piano). They will be performing songs by Alban Berg, Emilios Riadis and Guy Newbury.
Danae joined the Choir of Somerville College for a tour to Germany in summer 2005 and has been involved in several recitals and concerts at Somerville Chapel including a performance of Pergolesi's Stabat mater, conducted by David Crown. Guy Newbury is Senior Lecturer in Music at Pembroke College. Please see the recitals page for further details of our Friday lunchtime recital series. Stefan Schwarz (Recitals Coordinator) We will be having an SMS meeting this Thursday at 4pm. The venue should be Vaughan SCR (assume otherwise unless you hear from me again).
The agenda will include a discussion of Park Music Room, both the booking system and the equipment inside it, the allocation of pianos in college, and most importantly, elections for the position of President, from which I will be stepping down. As ever, please do feel bring your own items for the agenda which we can discuss. I look forward to seeing you there. If you are considering running for President (which of course, I would heartily recommend!) have a look at our constitution here, and do have a chat with me as I am more than happy to do so! Robert Pecksmith (Acting President) This week's lunchtime recital features guest performers Hannah Woolmer (violin) and Daniel Roberts (piano). They will be playing violin sonatas by Brahms and Franck. See the Facebook event and our recitals termcard for details.
Stefan Schwarz (Recitals Coordinator) Somerville is pleased to be able to offer undergraduates the opportunity of applying for a Margaret Irene Seymour Music Award.
The award, which may be valued at between £50 and £400 p.a. is open to ALL undergraduates, whether reading music or not. The recital will be presented to the Music Lecturer and Fellow with Responsibility for Music, together with others expert in the field if required, who will act as adjudicators. Application procedure: Students wishing to apply should contact Paul Francis, the Treasury & Project Administrator, by Monday of 5th week MT (11th November 2013) to register their interest in applying for the award. Auditions will be timetabled for the afternoon of the Thursday of 6th week MT (21st November 2013); The adjudicators will make recommendations to Education Committee in 7th week MT (27th November 2013); Applicants will be notified whether they have been successful or not. Payment to those who have been successful will be made direct to the student as soon as possible. Each award-holder will be required to submit a report detailing their use of the money and their contribution to College music-making by 4th week TT14.
