SMS will be holding their final meeting of term on Friday of 7th week at 3pm in the DHQ Music Room.
It would be great to see everyone there, amongst other things we will be discussing:
Please do come along, especially if you have any insights about band equipment which it would be helpful for us to invest in. Also, just a quick reminder that there is a recital at 1.15 in chapel today by our very own Isabel Singola, with Andrew Dickson on piano. It promises to be a really stunning concert, and will make for perfect post - lunch relaxation! Charlotte McLean (SMS President) Charlotte McLean was elected President at today's SMS meeting and therefore had to resign from her other two committee positions, Secretary and Social Secretary. Katie Jeffries-Harris will take over as Secretary, and Harry Travis will be the new Social Secretary.
Vaughan SCR was not available, so the meeting will instead take place in Park 3 (Freshers - if you enter Park by the main door, turn right, it's next to Park JCR).
There should be plenty to discuss about plans for the future so please do come along; the meeting will be over before 5pm. As I said before, this meeting is particularly important as we will be electing a new President; there may also be elections for other roles should they be needed. A must if you would like to get involved in any way in SMS! Robert Pecksmith (Acting President) We will be having an SMS meeting this Thursday at 4pm. The venue should be Vaughan SCR (assume otherwise unless you hear from me again).
The agenda will include a discussion of Park Music Room, both the booking system and the equipment inside it, the allocation of pianos in college, and most importantly, elections for the position of President, from which I will be stepping down. As ever, please do feel bring your own items for the agenda which we can discuss. I look forward to seeing you there. If you are considering running for President (which of course, I would heartily recommend!) have a look at our constitution here, and do have a chat with me as I am more than happy to do so! Robert Pecksmith (Acting President) Somerville is pleased to be able to offer undergraduates the opportunity of applying for a Margaret Irene Seymour Music Award.
The award, which may be valued at between £50 and £400 p.a. is open to ALL undergraduates, whether reading music or not. The holder will be expected to put the money toward instrumental or vocal tuition and to play a full part in the music-making in College, including participation in College concerts, and organizing, in collaboration with the SMS, an annual concert for all music award-holders in College. Candidates who already receive substantial College funding for their instrument/voice may be eligible for a titular award. Auditions will take place in the College Chapel. Applicants will be required to offer a programme of up to ten minutes duration, using their own accompanist(s) if necessary, on the instrument or voice on which they will spend the award. The recital will be presented to the Music Lecturer and Fellow with Responsibility for Music, together with others expert in the field if required, who will act as adjudicators. Application procedure: Students wishing to apply should contact Paul Francis, the Treasury & Project Administrator, by Monday of 5th week MT (11th November 2013) to register their interest in applying for the award. Auditions will be timetabled for the afternoon of the Thursday of 6th week MT (21st November 2013); The adjudicators will make recommendations to Education Committee in 7th week MT (27th November 2013); Applicants will be notified whether they have been successful or not. Payment to those who have been successful will be made direct to the student as soon as possible. Each award-holder will be required to submit a report detailing their use of the money and their contribution to College music-making by 4th week TT14. The adjudicators will then make a recommendation to Education Committee as to whether the award should be continued for a further year. Paul Francis HonFMus (ICMA) Treasury & Project Administrator I would like to invite you all to come along to our start of year SMS meeting. We'll meet at 5pm on Thursday (10th October) in the Terrace/Bar. Please do come along if you would like to get involved with SMS, or have any ideas for things musical, as we will be planning the events for the term.
Hope to see you then, or else at a concert soon! Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) Our new freshers' leaflet is now available for download. Printed copies will be distributed in 0th week. We hope to see you at the annual SMS Freshers’ Drinks in Vaughan SCR at 6:30pm on Saturday of 0th week (12th October).
We have lots of events planned for next term: There will be a Freshers' Concert on Thursday of 3rd week (31st October) and the weekly lunchtime recitals will resume on Friday of 1st week (18th October). Robert Pecksmith (Acting SMS President) Stefan Schwarz (Webmaster and Recitals Coordinator) There will be an SMS meeting on Friday at 5pm. Note the location will be New Council Room (by the lodge). In addition to any other items on the agenda, this meeting will be particularly important as we will be electing new committee members for SMS next year. This is a great opportunity to get involved, and shape the musical life of the college. While these roles are often filled by music students, absolutely anyone with an interest in music is encouraged to come forward - indeed, most of the present committee does not read music as a subject.
Positions that will be available are:
If anyone wishes to stand for it, the positions of Secretary, Webmaster and Recitals Coordinator are also available. The present officer of these roles will probably still be able to carry them out, so refilling these roles is less of a priority. However, if you would like to stand for any of them, go for it! More detailed descriptions of these roles can be found on our newly revamped website under 'About SMS - Constitution'. The positions are described from article 6 onwards, for anyone who's interested. Alternatively, (and much more interestingly) do feel free to talk/email to any of the present occupants of these positions, who will be able to give you the low-down on what the job entails. These are myself, Isabel Sinagola, Orly Watson, Douglas Knight and Ian Buchanan. Robert Pecksmith (SMS President) Our termcard for Trinity is now online. More information about this term's lunchtime recitals can be found on the recital page. Socials will take place after the evening concerts in weeks 4 and 7. We will also have an SMS dinner at the end of 8th week (details tbc).
